softly lighting the night

As a Goal Zero Dealer, we have a chance to work with some pretty amazing products that represent the leading edge of compact energy efficiency in portable formats. The new Light A Life 350 LED lanterns have been seen us supported through some pretty intense, long blackouts and have powered up team campsites + workshops at the Transmoto 12hr Dirtbike race in Batemans Bay. As a product evolution, they're a great example of what you can do with incremental enhancements on the already popular 1st generation Light A Life lanterns which have proven their worth in campsites and remote locations across the globe.

Here's a snapshot of the little details:

It's worth taking some time to sit with the Goal Zero engineers as they take you behind the scenes to understand the engineering constraints they had to work with, noting the harsh conditions some of these little lighting powerhouses often find themselves working in, from African heat to Mt Everest sub-zero, high altitude camps.
If you keep an eye out, you'll very likely find a LED lantern or two lighting up one of our ZeitTrike CargoBike crowd carriers from Quiet Rush during the upcoming LumenMotion festival and beyond.

Be sure to stop us if you see us out and about, we'll be delighted to demonstrate the value of these little powerhouses of luminosity.

Emergency lighting and portable solar power options

There's nothing like a good storm to remind us of our connected lives and reliance on power to both light up the night and keep our devices charged. It reminds us of why Energy Security is an important social and health issue and an element of Resilient Design.

The extended power outages experienced as part of the 2015 NSW Storms have been made easier for many of our customers using several popular products available from our online store.

Here's some of the gear we've been using to make life a little more comfortable as a family:
- Torch 250 Recharger, LED light: A small portable powerhouse with inbuilt solar to provide a versatile range of lighting, from LED floodlight to intense spotlight. Just leave it in the sunshine during the day for recharging.

- Yeti 150, Yeti 400 Solar Generators: These mid-weight solar rechargers are small , light and versatile. With inbuilt inverters, they create a portable 240V outlet and USB ports for powering a range of devices and simultaneously recharging through multiple USB outlets.

When paired with low power draw LED lights such as our Light A Life lamps, the mood of the house has been lifted with ambient and task based lighting options.

We've been able to run a large WAECO Car Fridge for up to 2days in a row without recharge using the Yeti400, confident in the knowledge that easy recharge was possible through paired solar panels. Talking with other car fridge users, we know there have been a lot of vehicle batteries drained and left flat, creating inconvenience and frustration.
Ice? No thanks, not needed.
Generator hum? None.
Frustration in queued waiting for fuel? Zilch.
It's during the dark times such as an extended blackout that runs for days that the product development focus of Goal Zero becomes clear. Much of their work is done providing powering + lighting options in the aftermath of events like Hurricane Katrina and in disaster relief operations around the world. The versatility of power, lighting and recharge options evident in their range means you can easily start small, with affordable portable solar products and build from there, in line with your own households power demands.

How will you cope next time your electricity grid outage recovery looks like this? It's something to think about.
