a living lab
Much of the more playful + experimental dimensions of our work occurs at the intersection of digital projects, low carbon energy generation techniques and lifestyle medicine, designed to get populations moving and exploring their curiosity through playful activation projects that support urban placemaking and foster community spirit. They also act as a medium through which people can explore Science, Technology, Engineering Arts + Maths (STEAM) skills in supported experiences - we've woven Internet Of Things (IoT), Portable Power, micro-computing, geospatial exploration and entrepreneurship skills into a wide range of our activation projects and our more formal Venture Catalyst events, whilst also supporting the work of other local makers like MiniSparx with our LittleBits kits.
Portable festivals of light, solar power + human motion. Our initial activation event was part of the 2015 Lakes Festival on Central Coast to see what might happen if we combined our love of evening rides along the Tuggerah Lake foreshore with a community STEAM skills activation element. In a joint collaboration with QuietRush, SparkCC MakerSpace and Rickshaw Revolution, we lit up cycleway bridges, inspired young local makers to try their hands at illumination workshops and bring it all together for a little luminous parade at dusk in Long Jetty. Weather conditions on the night of the Lakes Festival meant we were rained out, but our appetite for exploratory night rides is undiminished. Residents of Tuggerah Lake still see our illuminated cargotrike sculptures venture out on clear moonlit explorations (a glorious way to experience this landscape). Nearby regions have seen their own local variations pop up, with the Maitland River Festival and Newy Night Rides in Newcastle.
ChipFest was an evening Urban Placemaking experiment run by Lake Macquarie City Council that called on local digital artists to come together with interactive exhibits and performances. With a lifelong history of appreciating and adventuring on Lake Macquarie, we knew that nothing said Lake Mac more than a Big Prawn. It seemed the perfect counterpoint to our ZeitFish, so off to the shed we went, armed with steel rod, LEDs, a welder and a gleam in our eye. #ZeitPrawn was the emergent result, heading up to take in the evenings beverages and, of course, hot chips.
